The Global Mining Community Gathers in Toronto

September 29, 2016

This week some of the biggest names in the mining industry gathered in Toronto for Mines and Money Americas, one of the world's largest investment forums devoted to the mineral sector. Mines and Money forum attracts investors, financiers, brokers and mining developers from across the globe and acts as a platform to connect mining companies with global investors. The Toronto edition marked the first time the event has been held in North America.

At the Forum, Nick Thadaney, President and CEO, Global Equity Capital Markets, TMX Group, delivered a keynote address share with participants the TMX perspective on the sector. Canada's leading equity markets, Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and TSX Venture Exchange (TSXV), are home to more than half of the world's public mining companies. TSX and TSXV, on a combined basis, are also the world's #1 markets for mining financing, accounting for over 50% of the total dollars raised in the global public mining sector last year.

During his address, Mr. Thadaney acknowledged that although the mining sector has experienced a challenging and volatile business environment over the last few years, many companies have moved nimbly to adapt and meet market challenges. Despite the headwinds that the mining industry continues to face, TSX and TSXV are seeing positive signs in Canadian capital markets as the tide begins to turn in commodity prices and global demand for resources.

Here are a few notable statistics regarding the mining sector on TSX and TSXV so far this year:

  • More than $5 billion in public equity capital was raised on TSX and TSXV by listed mining companies through 738 financings. This represents 56% of the number of global mining financings globally.
  • Several mining financings, from small to large, were completed on both Exchanges, ranging from a $30-million raise by Gold Standard Ventures Corp. (TSXV:GSV) to a $1.3-billion public offering by Franco-Nevada Corporation (TSX:FNV.WT), and many more in between.
  • Nearly 920 financing transactions were completed on TSXV at the mid-way point of 2016, a 38% year-over-year increase compared to the same period last year.
  • Over 20 new mining companies listed on TSX, and nearly 10 mining companies graduated from TSXV to TSX.
  • 606 listed mining companies have seen share price appreciation over 100%.
  • The top 10 performers on the S&P/TSX Composite Index are all mining companies. Looking at the top 20, 18 are mining companies.

TMX at Mines and Money

TSX and TSXV are proud to have participated in the Mines and Money forums over the years, including London, Hong Kong, Australia, and now Toronto. This kind of large-scale mining investment forum is an excellent platform to bring the mining community together to share their ideas and knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities in North and South America.
